Review of Usurper's show at
Studio 24 with Khanate.
Starting later than announced
were the enigma that is USURPER. It was clear to see most people
just didn't get them. Two guys were hunched over what appeared
to be only a guitar pick up, a cymbal, a double-bass pedal and
two mic's and then proceeded to make mostly quiet noises with
them. USURPER describe themselves as 'nigh-inaudible experiments
with disabled instruments', so they know exactly what they're
doing. A low hum from the guitar pick up was accompanied with
occasional cracks and scrapes as well as some retching into the
microphone and a climax that consisted of each guy stamping on
the bass pedal as hard as they could. Some would say artistic,
others would just scratch their heads. At the very least, they're
unique and worth investigating if you want something truly different.
Ali.
